Define an Instructional Problem

Completion requirements

Write a one-page problem statement:

1.       Verify it passes the test for a real instructional problem.

2.       Write a brief introduction to the problem context. How did you identify the problem? Where is the problem happening? Who is involved? Who is the target audience? How urgent is it?

3.       Include the condition, criterion, possible causes, and symptoms.

A TRUE Instructional Problem:

A true instructional problem is one which has an instructional solution defined as a valid criterion.

  • A valid criterion is what happens when your student has learned what needs to be learned.
  • The criterion is how you determine success in your instruction and what you will test the student by (it must be observable and measurable).
  • When the student demonstrates the criterion, they have successfully completed the instruction.

Your Instructional Problem Statement must include the following elements:

  • Introduction (Context of the problem)
  • Condition (What is happening?)
  • Criterion (What should be happening?)
  • Possible Causes (Why do you think this problem exists?)
  • Symptoms (What are the outward signs or consequences of the problem?)
Save your completed document as a PDF and upload.
